The Likud and Blue and White have signed an agreement to form a unity government. MK Lapid: this government will not repeal the Supermarket Law. There will not be civil marriage.

Monday, 20.4.2020, on the eve of Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and head of Blue and White MK Benny Gantz signed an agreement to form a national unity government.

According to the agreement, the Speaker of the Knesset will be from the Likud and other Right-wing parties. They will also have the Finance Committee, the Economic Affairs and Corona Committeeת as well as the Treasury, Transportation, and Public Security portfolios. The Right-wing parties will also receive the Housing, Internal Affairs, Education, Environmental Protection, Energy, and Jerusalem portfolios among others.

The Likud will have the Foreign Affairs portfolio for half of the term and Blue and White for the other half.

Blue and White will receive the Defense, Justice, Financial Affairs, Welfare, Immigration Absorption, Culture and Sport, Communications, Tourism, Social Equality, Diaspora Affairs, Agriculture, and Strategic Affairs and Public Diplomacy portfolios.

Head of Blue and White, Benny Gantz, explained in a press release Tuesday:

We are in the midst of a crisis and it has landed on us at a time when we are dealing with the longest and more serious political crisis we have ever known. There are those who want to go on to more and more election cycles, and my friends and I could not stand by and watch. We thought it was better to win the fight against Corona than to win on social media. I would prefer a smaller, more humble government. When it comes to the block I lead, I am committed to working to lower the amount of positions that exist”.

MK Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid-Telem) responded to Gantz’s statement:

“If you are Secular or Traditional, know this: no promise that was made to you will be kept. Not one. This government will not cancel the Supermarket Law. There will be no civil marriage. There will be no Surrogacy Law. They will not learn Math or English in Ultra-Orthodox schools. They won’t learn and when the grow up they will have no way to make a living. Your children will have to support them”.
