February 12, 2020, the seventh homophobia report was published. The report, released by the Nir Katz Reporting Center at The Aguda-Israel’s LGBT Task Force shows that 2,125 cases of homophobia were reported this year, with an average of one case reported every four hours.
According to the report, Israel has seen a 36% increase from the previous year in the number of incidents of hate speech and violence against the LGBTQ community.
In response to the report, Chairwoman of The Aguda Hila Farr said:
“Homophobia kills and injures thousands of victims who are physically and verbally attacked, thrown out of the house and pushed to the edge – sometimes to the point of suicide. This reality does not just come from anywhere, there are those who choose to perpetuate it. It is strengthened when the Israeli Minister of Education wants to do conversion therapy on an entire population in society and the state chooses to award a prize to a man who calls for boycotting thousands of LGBTQ people”.
Blue and White Chairman MK Benny Gantz tweeted in response:
“2,125 cases too many. The rise in violence against the gay community is shocking, but not surprising – when homophobia and hatred begin in government, how can the data be surprising? I intend to intensify the punishment for hate crimes against the community, improve its status in rights and legislation, and especially invest in education for the acceptance of every person, no matter their religion, disposition or skin color. It is 2020, we must move forward“.
