Summary Report of the 20th Knesset

JPW report recaps the 20th Knesset: Rejecting hundreds of bills seeking to promote pluralism and equality, the most right-wing and most religious coalition government in Israel’s history doubled down on the state-funded Orthodox monopoly over religion

Over the last four years, the 20th Knesset consistently strengthened the Orthodox monopoly over religion in Israel while rejecting hundreds of bills that sought to promote a degree of pluralism and religious equality. At Jewish Pluralism Watch, we have sought to paint a portrait of this Knesset, which was led by the most right-wing and most religious coalition government in Israel’s history. In this report, we summarize legislation, delve into the budgets channeled towards religious services, consider the 20th Knesset’s legacy, and identify the principal activities of each of the parties. In publishing this summary of four years of monitoring the Knesset, we hope to empower the public to ask questions and demand accountability throughout the election season in order to strengthen the fundamental aspiration that Israel  be a Jewish and democratic state
