Approximately one week before the final deadline to form the government, Members of Knesset from the Yisrael Beiteinu list went to party chairman Avigdor Lieberman and asked him to consider joining a narrow Right-wing government.
Tuesday, 3.12.2019, Oded Forer and Hamad Amar, Members of Knesset from the Yisrael Beiteinu party went to Avigdor Lieberman, party chairman, and asked him to join Benjamin Netanyahu and form a narrow Right-wing government to avoid going to elections yet again.
Head of Shas, Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri posted on Facebook and claimed that Avigdor Lieberman is trying to sabotage agreements that would lead to a unity government:
“Any time there is any progress in talks between Blue and White and the Likud, Lieberman acts to torpedo the progress and leads Gantz and Netanyahu astray and then blames them for the fact that we are going again towards elections”.
Charimand of Yisrael Beiteinu, MK Lieberman responded in a post to Facebook this morning:
“The close cooperation between the Anti-zionist parties from the joint list and the Non-Zionist parties Shas and United Torah Judaism, in the Finance Committee, in legislation pertaining to religion and state, in the draft to the IDF, etc, threatens Herzl’s Zionist vision“.
As you may remember, at the beginning of the week, Minister of the Interior Deri published a post against Lieberman pertaining to the difficulties of forming a government and in it wrote:
“You have demanded upwards of two million shekel for immigrants from the former Soviet Union who don’t work and don’t pay taxes. You demanded opening within the Ministry of Absorbtion 17 representatives of countries formerly in the Soviet Union, countries where there is doubt that there are any Jews in them“.
Head of Yisrael Beiteinu MK Avigdor Lieberman wrote in response:
“The remarks make by MKs in Shas about immigrants from the former Soviet Union are not only pure racism but also reek of hatred. The chorus led by Minister Deri was joined by MK Ben Tzur who chose to disparage immigrants at a the Jabotinsky Convention Leadership of Beitar Olami at the Begin Heritage Center of all places. According to MK Ben Tzur, apparently Shas would ask Ze’ev Jabotinsky, who was born in Odessa in the Ukrane, to prove his Jewishness through a DNA test“.
MK Alex Kushnir (Yisrael Beiteinu) also addressed Minister Deri’s statement during a speech in the Plenum:
“My Friends members of Knesset, this week a new line of racism in Israel was crossed, and by a Minister in the government of all people. The Minister of the Interior slammed 1.2 million Israeli citizens saying that they don’t work and don’t pay taxes. I am, of course, talking about immigrants from the former Soviet Union. In addition, an MK from Shas claims that the people who live in Amidar are non-Jews. So I have a few things to say. My parents, like the parents of many like me, immigrated to Israel in the 90s and worked in any available job, and it didn’t matter what their degrees were in and what their education was. Afterwards, those same people were the ones who moved the educational system forward and saved the healthcare system. Aryeh Deri made Aliyah to Israel in 1968 from Morocco, and I want to remind him that this country was founded in 1948 by the same Jews from the former Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe. So I want to address Aryeh Deri and tell him–it is a shame he isn’t here–that he does not own Judaism and he does not own the State of Israel. And I have another thing to say, that I am amazed by: how can it be that I have not heard from the leadership of the two biggest parties, Blue and White and the Likud, no denunciation of what he said, no denunciation of this racist statement that is simply as low as it gets”.
