Tuesday, 7.7.20, the Ultra-Orthodox news site B’chadrei Charedim published that Minister of Building and Housing Yaakov Litzman told Prime Minister Netanyahu that he will leave the Coalition if the Chief Rabbinate is forced to ordain women as the Supreme Court mandated.
Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court decision to allow women to take the Chief Rabbinate ordination tests was published. Following this decision, Minister Litzman told PM Netanyahu that he will leave the Coalition if the Rabbinate is forced to perform the ordinations.
Minister of Religious Services Yaakov Avitan said:
“The Jewish Halacha and tradition that the Chief Rabbinate is charged with safeguarding does not allow training women to be Rabbis. As women are interested in Talmudic studies, they can complete them in the Ministry of Higher Education, in the different universities in different Judaic studies tracks”.
During the meeting, the suggestion was made that the tests for women will be held by the Ministry of Higher Education and not the Chief Rabbinate who is against holding the exams. MInister of Higher Education Zeev Elkin expressed a general consent to this idea.
